21st of December 2009
Mum got me up at 4, got everything ready to go, had breakfast and we left at 20 past 5.
The roads were covered in ice and snow; it was finally starting to feel like Christmas. All the branches of the passing trees looked like they’d come straight off a Christmas card. We listened to Christmas songs on our way which got me in the Christmas mood. I love Christmas songs, they’re all so fun and enjoyable and the lyrics are all true, but anyways, I’m not supposed to be talking about Christmas! So, going back to our journey, it was pretty simple really, stopped at a service station on our way and had a brew and then arrived at the ‘purple parking’ at around half 10.
We had to wait for the rest of the family to turn up before we could go to the airport so we waited in the car, well I did, Mum, Dad and Ryan decided to look out for Uncle Bri’s car. There was no way I was going out there! It was snowing and sleeting (if that’s a word) and it was so cold that my toes felt like they were going to drop off! I’m not exaggerating.
When the rest of the family arrived, we exchanged the usual kiss on the cheek as we tend to do when greeting each other and then we got our stuff together and headed for the mini bus that was to take us to Heathrow airport. We put our cases in the trailer and we were off!
The journey to the airport wasn’t too long. We arrived, got our cases from the trailer and headed into terminal 4. I’d never been in an airport before so I was pretty excited at this stage. We went straight to check in and said our goodbyes to our luggage. We had something to eat and went off to departure. Typical me, I bleeped when I went through security so I had to be touched up by a random woman but I got let through anyway thankfully. Looking back, I had some money in my pocket so I think it was probably that. I felt relieved when I realised that we were in! All we had to do then was to do what we English fold do best... wait.
Our gate was to open at 1 so we wandered the shops for half an hour. Finally after having bought some water and fruity polos for the journey and waiting an extra five more minutes for our gate to open, we headed for gate 10. Once again we had to wait, but that wasn’t for too long and then we were allowed to get on our plane. The seats weren’t exactly spacious so I wasn’t completely comfortable but I made the most of what space I had.
There a couple of announcements while the place got to the runaway and then with a few big bounces as we took off, we were in the air, flying! It felt amazing, so amazing that I even cried. Don’t pull that face! I had never been in a plane before; it was just the knowing that I was finally in the air. I caught a glimpse out of Grandma’s window of the Earth below us. All the snow, the houses, the fields! It was all breathtaking. I still can’t believe I cried but I supposed I’m a sucker for something beautiful and as sad as that sounds, just seeing everything below was pretty amazing.
Once we levelled out above the clouds I calmed down and settled for the 6/7 hour flight I had ahead of me. I watched 3 films; Aliens in the attic, Bandslam and The Time Traveller’s wife. All of which were pretty cool films and I liked them. I had some dinner on the plane, grilled chicken in onion sauce (still got the menu!) and I ate just the piece of chicken because I didn’t like the broccoli or the potato things that were with it. The chicken was nice though at least. Overall, the only thing about the flight that I didn’t like was the landing. I enjoyed the rest of the experience.
When we landed at about half 12, it was 21 degrees outside. Yep you heard me, 21 degrees at half 12 at night. In England, it was probably something like minus 6.
Once we’d been through arrivals and fetched our cases we went to find Uncle Matt and Kelly. When we found them we went to the car park, found their cars and went on to Uncle Matt’s Villa. I went in Kelly’s car and it took us about 45 minutes to get there. I was sweating like crazy most of the way there! The whole of the journey to the villa though I was screaming in my head ‘I’m in Dubai!!’ Even though I was there, it didn’t feel real, it felt like a dream... but it wasn’t! I was actually in Dubai!
We reached Uncle’s villa, said goodnight to everyone and then Uncle took us to our villa that was ours for the next 9 days. I loved it. It had a pool, although we couldn’t go in it because it hadn’t been cleaned. We had to look after two cats as well, Jasmine and Tia, Cath and Scott’s Cats. Cath and Scott were over here in England for Christmas so we were kind of house sitting I guess, as well as Cat sitting! I stayed in Kelly’s room which was amazing, she’s proper girly so everything was pink. She had her own on suite bathroom with a huge mirror! She also has a plasma TV in her room and DVDs and CDs and of course a big comfy double bed with feather duvet and pillows and air con! It was awesome! I got ready for bed still thinking I was in a dream and that was the 21st of December 2009.
